The Galactic Sherlock Holmes 9.10
By Don Hobbs

For those of you who follow SherlockPeoria on a regular basis you are very familiar with my bibliography of foreign translations of the Canon titled The Galactic Sherlock Holmes. This is an electronic bibliography that is updated monthly. In October, version 9.10 will be available. This will be a newer, cleaner look than any of the previous editions.

I have spent the last month re-editing and eliminating most of the inconsistencies. I have also separated those listings with more than one volume. I now give each entry it’s own listing. The main change was with the La Domenica del Corriere entries. These Italian magazines ran in two, three, and sometimes four consecutive issues. The text boxes were crowded beside the cover images. Now they are easier to read due to better spacing. I have also added red question marks (????) where there is missing information.

The other major and most significant change is with the Japanese section. Thanks to the monumental help from Yuichi Hirayama, most of the Japanese section is now listed in the Japanese spelling. So now A Study in Scarlet is listed as Hiiro no Kenkyu and so forth. In many instances the English title is listed as well as the illustrator’s name. This is now done in a consistent order throughout the entire database. Yuichi also corrected several Japanese entries that were completely wrong. Many of the series are now listed together where they were previously listed without the series title and thus listed apart.

The Hound of the Baskervilles changed to Baskerville-ke no Inu and it was first listed under “H” and then under  “B.” Once the re series title is :Sherlock Holmes Zensyu 5: Baskerville-ke no Inu (Complete Sherlock Holmes 5: Hound of the Baskervilles) it is not only found under “S” but also all of the series are together under “S” and in numerical order. I have made the first round of corrections and sent the Japanese section back to Yuichi for further corrections. His help has been invaluable.

The Galactic Sherlock Holmes 9.10 will be 818 pages or 29 pages more than version 9.9, the current edition. The new entries in 9.10 include several Argentinean  magazines. The new issues are Leoplan (p.687, 705, 706); Pistas (709), and Ellery Queen (645). There are many new Japanese titles as well. My friend and fellow foreign language collector Takahiko Endo sends new Japanese titles regularly.

The Galactic Sherlock Holmes 9.10 will be available next week. I would write more but I must continue working on the database. It is a never-ending process.

Happy Collecting!!
