July 27 - Battle of Maiwand. British suffer a horrible defeat, and among
the many, many casualties, a Private Thomas Wiggins is killed and a
Dr. John H. Watson is wounded.
1881
Between January and April - Julia Stoner found dead in Surrey home.
October 22 - First issue of Tit-bits hits the streets, taking George
Newnes, former vegetarian restaurant owner, into the publishing world.
1882
April 28 - Major Sholto, of Upper Norwood, late of the Thirty-fourth
Bombay Infantry, found dead, after having suffered for years from an
enlarged spleen.
May 4 - Advertisement appears in the Times asking for the whereabouts
of a Miss Mary Morstan.
1883
March - 'Do We Progress?' by James Mortimer, published in Journal of
Psychology.
Early April - Dr. Grimesby Roylott found dead in Surrey home.
May 2 - Former Florida planter and Civil War veteran Colonel Elias Openshaw
dies in Horsham.
August - Mr. Neligan of Cornwall lost at sea in North Atlantic, after
stealing securities from holdings of Dawson and Neligan.
1885
January 7 - Mr. Joseph Openshaw, patentee of the Openshaw unbreakable
tire, dies in Horsham.
October - Events "uncannily similar" to those later published
as "The Adventure of the Second Stain" occur, according to
Trelawny Hope.

January - Sir Eustace Brackenstall of Marsham, Kent marries Miss Mary
Fraser of Adelaide, Australia.
October - Release of Miss Grace Dunbar
from jail in Gibson murder.

March 21 - Miss Irene Adler, singer, marries Mr. Godfrey Norton, lawyer.
April 2 - Emmas Simms, a George Street prostitute, mortally wounded

August 7 - Martha Tabram found murdered on landing of George Yard Buildings.
August 31 - Polly Nichols found gruesomely murdered in Buck's Row.

forger, over cards in Waterloo Road night club.
April - John Vincent Harden, the well known tobacco millionaire, is
persecuted peculiarly.
July - Captain Peter Carey stabbed to death with a harpoon in Woodman's
Lee.
Late November - Mr. Cadogan West found dead on London Underground.

March
16 - Miss Brenda Tregennis found dead; her brothers Mr. Owen Tregennis
and Mr. George Tregennis committed to mental institution.
March 17 - Mr. Mortimer Tregennis found dead.

January - Mr. James Dodd, of Throgmorton Street, and Mr. Godfrey Emsworth,
the son of Colonel Emsworth the Crimean V.C., enlist in the Middlesex
