Stand on the Terrace It is with much sadness that I must report the passing beyond Reichenbach Falls of my friend and fellow Sherlockian Mike Miller. On Friday, June 26, 2008, Mike lost his 2 year battle with rectal cancer. Mike was an outstanding member of The Diogenes Club of Dallas (D.C.D.) and fellow traveling member of The Great Whimsical Sherlockian Tour of Oklahoma and Texas. According to Mike's lovely bride Patricia, he was in complete peace with everyone and everything at the time of his death. I first met Mike in 1998 when he contacted me to ask if there were still any slots left for the Silver Blaze Race that the D.C.D. was planning. He was one of the first to put down his money. The First Annual Silver Blaze Cup was eventually ran in May of 2000 and Mike was there at The Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. He rarely missed a D.C.D. meeting thereafter. Mike was noted for winning nearly every quiz. Sherlock Holmes was just one of the many facets of Mike's vast interests. He is still the only person I know who collected Slide Rules, of which he would call me sometimes so excited about finding some obscure one. Mike was also our usual entertainment at the annual D.C.D. picnic held at my house. He would faithfully bring his guitar and lead everyone in sing-alongs from "You Never Mention Aunt Clara" to his own composition of "Like a Sherlock Holmes" set to Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone". It was Mike's narrative that gave the documentary "The Great Whimsical Sherlockian Tour of Oklahoma and Texas" the cohesion it needed. He could quote a myriad of classic authors or recite the entire theme to Super Chicken with equal ease. Mike will be missed in the Dallas Sherlockian community.
Dallas Sherlockian Mike Miller sing "Like a Sherlock Holmes" I have often been told by many friends that if they were ever on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, that they would want me as their lifeline. Mike would be my choice as a lifeline. We miss you Mike. Peace.
