Sherlock Holmes for President in 2008
By Don Hobbs

On Tuesday, November 4, we Americans go to the polls for that quad-annual event, Election Tuesday. The Democrat, Barack Obama, and Republican, John McCain, will  be glad that this marathon will finally come to fruition. However, no one will be happier than me. I am so tired of the bickering, the pundit’s predictions, and the general stupidity of the American “sheeple” (this is a “hobbsism”) being interviewed by all of the television networks. From my point of view there is not much different between the two candidates once one peels back a few layers of the political onion.

I am stuck up in the Pacific Northwest so I voted early voted last week. I am not a political animal and normally do not discuss politics but I will tell you who I voted for and my choice was a write-in candidate – Sherlock Holmes. I know what you are thinking, that I wasted my vote.  Nay I say. It has been a dream of mine every since I have been old enough to vote, to be able to vote just one time for the most competent candidate instead of the least competent one. Obama or McCain both excite me as much as a case of the hemorrhoids. I do not think either one offers much, so I feel that voting for either is a waste.

I guest technically voting for Sherlock is not the best choice since he is not American, but he did say in “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor” that he believed that the folly of a monarch and the blundering of a minister in far-gone years would not prevent our children from being some day citizens of the same world-wide country under a flag that would be a quartering of the Union Jack with the Stars and Stripes. Maybe he is a bit old but so is McCain. Sherlock certainly could bring a different perspective to the Oval Office, although I guess the smoking policies in the White House might need to be changed.

Holmes would bring logical thinking to the office and he certainly would not be outsmarted by congress. However, he would surely give the Secret Service fits if he decided to go out for a stroll. After all, he is a master of disguises. The crime rates would definitely see a significant drop. I could go on spouting additional positive reasons that Sherlock Holmes would make a good president, but I know like every other American that once again it would not be the most able person who will be elected but the one with the best spin. I am sure my choice does not have a chance and it will be either the Democrats or the Republicans that win. Maybe someday America will fully support a multi-party system. Then we will have better choices of the person who will lead the Free World.

I have done my civic duty and voted. Maybe it was a wasted vote and maybe it was not but it was my choice. You must vote your heart and have no regrets. I don’t.

Happy Collecting!!
