Big journal, big staff, so you know a big effort went into Varieties of Ash. A variety of solid and well-known Sherlockian writers got this one off to a big Chicago-based start, but ironically, the Adventuress on the cover of every issue didn't do so well when the journal moved to her native New Jersey. The reasons for the journal's demise are, of course, much more complicated than a simple move, as are the endings to most journals. At the time I noticed that around Illinois, at least, there were a lot more disappointed Sherlockians than when some journals fold -- which means it had definitely created more than a ripple in the Sherlockian pond.
