Going Gray

More observant members of that small, but appreciated group who commonly stop by Sherlock Peoria may have noticed a color change in our pages in the last week. Gone is the goldenrod of yesterday, and here to stay is the gray of Sherlock Holmes’s eyes and dressing gown. While Sherlock Peoria has never been among the most graphically gorgeous of Sherlockian sites, it has remained pretty much the same for going on seven years now, and the time for a few changes is upon us.

Goldenrod was chosen as an original motif for this site as it was the color of Peoria’s Sherlockian publications going back for decades, back to Wheelwritings and Plugs & Dottles. And while that was a lovely color of paper for a newsletter or a journal cover, it does add a certain over-bright quality to a web site.

But the color is not the only change coming to Sherlock Peoria. A new design for the front page will probably be the next step, we might finally get to RSS feeds as has been suggested by more than one of our visitors. Beyond that, well there are still suprises that have been waiting in the wings well over a decade. (How can that be on a six-year-old site, you ask? Wait and see.)

As the site goes gray, as its webmaster goes gray, that color tends to remind us of one very important fact: we’ll never have enough time. Not enough time for spending with all our Sherlockian friends. Not enough time for adding all the bells and whistles to our websites. Not enought time to write everything we would want to write about Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

Gray is the blurry color of the world zipping by, isn’t it? And always a reminder to take a deep breath, grab onto the hand-holds, and go flying along for the ride.

Hang on!

Your humble correspondent,

Brad Keefauver
